The Old Fort Zanzibar - Museum A History Building Only

Old fort Zanzibar

The Old Fort Zanzibar

The Old Fort Zanzibar Built by Omani Arabs when they seized the island of Zanzibar from the Portuguese, this historical building is not a museum as such, but nevertheless makes for a highaly interesting visit.

It is the oldest building on the island with an enclosed courtyard that now serves as a cultural heritage centre, and also holds a curio shop selling culturally orientated merchandise. In the evening the open-air amphitheater comes alive with dancing and music shows that are held on most nights.

Peace Memorial Museum - History after WWII

Peace Memorial Museum- Zanzibar

Peace Memorial Museum this is at the southern end of stone town, near the junction of creek road and kaunda road in the area called Mnazi Moja. It is also known by its local title: Beit El Amani (House of Peace). With its distinctive dome, arabesque windows and whitewashed walls, the building looks like a mosque or basilica church. It was designed by the British architect J H Sinclair, who also designed the high court, the British residency and several other public buildings around Zanzibar town.

Peace Memorial Museum

‘Museum’ is a misnomer nowadays, as virtually all its viewable exhibits have been shifted to the rapidly developing museum in the House of Wonders and the place now serves as a library. Its well-known giant tortoises have been transferred to Prison Island.

This dome-shaped, whitewashed building was designed by the renowned British architect J H Sinclair, and looks much like a mosque or basilica church. It was built to commemorate the end of the First World War and holds a small museum that takes visitors through the history of Zanzibar. It has sections on archaeology, early trade, slavery, palaces, mosques, and sultans, and also displays a medical chest that once belonged to the famous Dr Livingstone.

The Livingstone tower of Bagamoyo - Catholic Museum

The Livingstone tower

The Livingstone tower of Bagamoyo is a two storey high, 2 x 2 m (approx) building that is named after the great Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone and is located inside the compound of the Catholic church of Bagamoyo – Tanzania.

It is said to be the remains of the oldest church of east Africa, as well as part of a larger historic remains site that consists of buildings such as the Holy Ghost fathers house, the sisters house (now museum), the dispensary, the baobab tree and the missionary cemetery all of which date back to the late 19th century or early 20th century.

A history of the tower the tower was built by father Anthony Horner in 1872 as part of the first church of the Holy ghost mission and presumably the oldest in east Africa. The church itself was later on dismantled and a new one built nearby that still stands today.

After his death and being transported from Zambia by his two porters (Chuma and Susi), Dr. Livingstone’s body was interred at the tower for one night (24th – 25th of February 1874) while awaiting transportation to Westminster, London [1]. Because of this, the tower was renamed in his honor.

What to do there?Nothing much, except admire the architecture of the tower, the artifacts inside it and read the descriptions. The tower is quite small and much of it has already been renovated with modern materials such as a cement floor and paint. There is a building next to it, although this is presumably not the old church. Other than that, you could check out the missionary cemetery at the end of the road that is left of the tower or the sisters house (now museum), the church and the Holy Ghost fathers house.

Location of Livingstone towerThe Livingstone tower of Bagamoyo is located at the end of Mango drive and inside the Catholic church’s compound, in the northern part of the town of Bagamoyo – Tanzania. It is also behind the current (stone built) church and next to the gates of a teachers college, the church’s dispensary, the holy ghost mission fathers house and the catholic museum. For more information on its location, please see the map below (click to start).

How to get there?Head north from the town centre using the tarmac paved road that goes along the beach, until you get to Mango drive (a long stretch of dirt road with Mango trees on either side). Turn onto Mango dr. and head to the end, the tower should be visible straight ahead when standing between the church (left) and the ruins of the fathers house (right).

Holy ghost Mission fathers house - Bagamoyo Museum. That Tells History of Church in East Africa

Holy ghost Mission fathers house

The Holy ghost mission fathers’ house is one of the many landmarks in the town of Bagamoyo – Tanzania that are of historic value. It has three stories and is one of six sites that are in the compound of the Catholic church (Bagamoyo parish), with the others being the dispensary, the sisters’ house (now museum), the Livingstone tower, the baobab tree where madame de Chevalier tied her donkey, the current church and the cemetery where some of the church’s earliest missionaries were buried, all of which date back to the late 19th century.

A history of the placeThe house was built originally built in 1873 to be a residence for the Holy ghost fathers, a group of missionaries of the Roman Catholic church [1]. The whole construction was done in three stages, the first part of which was the ground floor that was completed in 1873, then the first floor in 1877 and finally the second floor in 1903.

In 2009, part of the front wall collapsed but was later on rebuilt [2]. The building is currently owned and run by the government of Tanzania and not the church.

Holy ghost Mission fathers house

What to do there?Nothing much as the whole building is currently under renovations by the government, but there is talk of plans for it to be open to the public in the future (unconfirmed). Leaving little activity at the site but admiration (if you like) of the 19th century architecture that has stood the test of time for over a century, or you could visit the other four buildings nearby (see list above).

If you have a keen eye, you would notice that the house, the garden, the statue in front of it and mango drive all the way to the cross on the beach, form an arrow like shape, visible from the air (see map), that points slightly north of the equator. We don’t exactly know why yet but it may have something to do with the direction of sunrise.

Location of Holy ghost fathers houseThe Holy Ghost fathers’ house is located at the end of Mango dr. and in the northern suburbs of the small town of Bagamoyo – Tanzania. Behind it is a teacher’s college and infront of it Mango drive that leads to the christian cross that is on the beach. For more information on its location, please see the map below (click to start).

How to get there? From the town centre, you would have to head north along a tarmac paved road that runs alongside the coast until you get to Mango drive, a long stretch of dirt road with Mango trees on either side. The house should be one of two buildings you see at the end of this road (right).

Rev. Pastor ANTONY LUSEKELO (Mzee wa Upako) Biography

Antony Lusekelo

Hata baba yangu wakati anahama Iringa tena kurudi nyumbani Mbeya mimi nilikataa. Nikabaki Iringa.

  =FAMILIA

Mimi nimeoa na nina watoto wanne, Mode, Salome, Mishael na Elishadai. (anacheka) hahahahaa…Majina yao yanafanana….

GOOD SAMARITAN CANCER HOSPITAL (GSCH)

The Hospital Owned By Catholic Church - Ifakara Diocese

Good Samaritan Cancer Hospital is a non-profit private health care institution owned by Missionaries of Compassion under Catholic Diocese of Ifakara. It was inaugurated in February 2020.
The Hospital is located in Ifakara-Morogoro Region, Tanzania and thus serving as cancer Centre for the western, southern and southern highland regions of Tanzania.

We provide comprehensive investigations and treatment of all pre-malignant lesions and solid cancers. Furthermore, the Hospital offers free cancer screening services twice a month (First and last Thursday of each month)

he foundation stone for Good Samaritan Cancer Hospital (GSCH) was laid on 13th December 2015 and the construction started in January 2016. The whole infrastructure of GSCH to accommodate 100 in-patients with complete Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment facilities was completed in October 2019. GSCH is committed to provide quality and affordable preventive, diagnostic and curative services for all types of cancer.

Cancer is among the leading causes of death and cause a significant burden on societies across the world. However, when identified early, cancer is more likely to respond to effective treatment and hence, greater probability of surviving, less morbidity, and less cost.
Like in most developing countries, due to lack of preventive measures, disorganized screening programs and limited resources, cancer mortality rates are unacceptably high in Tanzania. About 45,000 to 50,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed every year, and 80% of cancer patients in the country die each year. It is in this disturbing, yet fact situation that Most. Rev. Dr. Salutaris Libena, the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Ifakara invited the late Rev. Dr. Jose Kaimlett, the founder of Missionaries of Compassion to establish a Cancer Hospital in Ifakara.

MD - BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Agapiti is a medical doctor and oncology specialist. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D) degree at the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy-Russia, Master of Medical Sciences (M.MedSc)- Oncology at the Central University of Nicaragua, and in 2018 he completed his doctorate studies at the University of Tokyo- Japan and awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree majoring in Gynecologic Oncology. He is also a researcher and has published several articles in his field in internationally peer-reviewed journals.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MEDICAL SERVICES

Whether we all know about it or not, cancer is real, it is there and it is increasingly shortening thousands of lives every year. Here at Good Samaritan Cancer Hospital (GSCH) we are committed to prevent, diagnose and treat all types of cancer using highly sophisticated and state-of-the-art cancer diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
